Ceremonial ground breaking

The ceremonial ground breaking was made on the 28 August 2009. Under Sodermanland County Governor Bo Konberg the ground was broken jointly by representatives from the four organisations - the corner stones of the museum - which have made the project possible:
  • Swedish Armed Forces - General Jan Salestrand
  • Strangnas Municipality - Cultural Board Chairman Charlotta Steneskog
  • National Museums of Military History - 1. Military Antiquarian Christian Braunstein
  • Kilenkrysset - CEO Jan Persson

Towards a new museum!

At last the details of the land have been settled. On the 25th of November, the local council took the decision for the combined buy and lease agreement. In the press release you can read more. In the autumn of 2007 the funds were transfered from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Culture, by a parliamentary decision, in order to ensure the preservation of the Swedish military heritage.
Take a look at our pictures page showing planned exihibitions, and also vehicles in the collection.

The new large museum Arsenalen will be situated in idyllic Strangnas. The historic decision was made by the local council in the end of November.

Five years of work has been rewarded with success. In Strangnas, by the motorway E20, Arsenalen - Swedens Defence Vehicle Museum - will be built. In the multi-cultural facility there will also be a section showing the local defence from the 1500's to the present, a live soldier's croft, a replica of the old Officers' Mess from Malma Hed, a harmonic exposition of Swedens Military Music, and a huge collection of tin figurines in exquisite dioramas, showing various aspects of life from ancient times until today.

The main attraction will be the carefully designed dioramas, where it is easy to understand the role played by the vehicles in the Swedish Defence Forces. The remaining approximately 350 vehicles will be on display in study collections.

Outdoors will be display arena and all terrain track. The purpose is to show vehicles in action and visitors will be allowed to go on rides. Different display teams will be invited to participate in the main events during the year. Pic-nic areas and plenty of parking space, even for buses and campers, will be available.
The facilities will be designed with the disabled in mind, and will also house the library, a research section, a souvenir shop and a café. Apart from the public areas there will also be workshops and storage areas. All in all the museum will consist of approximately 10.000 square metres, plus the outdoor facilities.

The construction will begin during the spring of 2009 and the inauguration is planned to take place in the summer of 2010.

Transports from Axvall

The National Museums of Military History (SFHM) are moving items and vehicles from Axvall to Strangnas. The first step, which is currently on-going, is to transfer stored artefacts, i.e. those items not currently on display.

During the 2008 season the Armour Museum of Axvall is open to the public as usual.
